A Dancer’s Experience with Rehab

RAD G3 Exam: Dawn & I walking in with pride and confidence

Recently, a client of ours - Grace - who is a yoga, pilates and barre teacher of many years and whom recently started taking serious ballet lessons shared her rehabilitation experience with us. She had a chronic knee pain which had flared up so badly it was affecting her in her daily activities and work. But through a short span of time, she managed to conquer it patiently and resolutely and reaped a sweet reward upon completing her Grade 3 ballet exam.

What was noteworthy about her journey was how she pushed through all the typical challenges that a dancer would have to face, and also that of one being more senior in age.

At Physiotherabeat, we often get dancers coming in with dance injuries; dancers of all levels of expertise and diversity be it classical or street dance styles.

Besides the fact that it is generally hard for mainstream dancers in Singapore to find appropriate and empathetic care in the public and private sector of our local healthcare sector, these types of clients typically come with the additional unique physical characteristics of being hypermobile.

Hypermobility in a nutshell

Add to that the factor of age. Mind you, we are not ageist and we always believe that age is just a number for most people when it comes to recovery. However, what age means is that any neglect or incorrect moving pattern present in one’s life would have been multiplied by the number of years it has been allowed to accumulate.

Therefore, we really applaud Grace’s effort in recovering and beating all odds. We are so glad she decided to share her story and we would like to inspire more of you out there who struggle in similar ways.

Thank you Grace!
